ReplyDeleteI think she should know all these different culture remedies and experiment with weird recipes, which he hates.
And because she only flew to see the world she soaked up as much from every place she went, and he has been to the same places but has never really seen the places so through this she further points out he has "thrown his life away"- if we decide he has this mentality.
Write about how these characters have two very clear-cut, distinctly different points of view on everything.

Her roommate should be a guy that keeps shrooms in the cockpit and adult brownies in the overhead compartment. A hippy-style of housekeeping; total slob at home. He works because he has to and not because he wants to. He shares no desire or interest to see the places he flies to. It's all the same sky to him.

I saw her more like that and him more of a stick in the mud, straight laced. But he could be more of a party guy. But if he works because he has to and not because he wants to he would not be trying to become a pilot- he would probably be the flight attendant. And we are talking about this in the wrong space... so I'm going to put this down to his area too.

ReplyDeleteBeing a pilot is a lot of work it is a career and normally something people dedicate their life to. That said we are not dealing with a pilot we are dealing with an ex-pilot, a man that has been told he is done doing what he loves. I think him being the party guy can work but he is partying not because he is free, he is terrified of what is next. As long as he denies it and treats it like a party he doesn't have to deal with the end of his career or marriage.
While the woman on the other handle though may love adventure does not care of the place she is in now. It might be depressing for her to be surrounded by plain old american culture when she goes out. Perhaps she doesn't go out much at all, confining herself to the apartment. She might still be into all the other cultures of the world but she has no means of experiencing them. Her eccentricity is amplified by being in the apartment all the time and surrounded by middle america. maybe every other week she is even redecorating the apartment to feel like it is in a different culture and trying to recreate these worlds in the apartment.

I wouldn't think that she would be much younger as she has tested out many jobs in the past, maybe even has a masters in Archeology.
She rides a bicycle with a military issue helmet that she painted gold.
Annie has spent a lot of time away from people as she was working on an excavation in South America for the last three years and decided to just come home after finding her lover with another woman. (they worked together)
On her way back home to the South, she watched the flight attendants carefully, noticing their sleek clothes and pretty smiles, she also over heard convos. about the attendants up coming trips to Paris.
Annie makes her way to flight school only to be advanced into the field right away given her degree and can do attitude, making friends with senior staff. Annie needs a place to stay and is recommended to take over a friends lease that he shares with a Pilot (but it's ok because he is never there).
Annie moves into the apartment, moves the furniture around, adds paint and knick knacks to suit her life. Large photographs of bones and safari hats hang the walls.
She is chic/geek. Has the soul of a 50 year old but the spontaneity of an 18 year old. She rarely mentions her degree, is very aware of herself but is ready to try new things and see the world like she thought her past job was to lead her to discover.
She dates musicians she meets on her flights as they are on tour, she knows they wont be long term relationships and gets to see their shows and enjoy the cities she stops in. Generally she will date artists as they share her new found freedom on life, she studied too much and missed out on her young adulthood.
She likes to host proper dess parties in her small apartment and hotel rooms.
Annie also is confrontational with people who litter and talk on their phones while driving (she isn't afraid to walk up to their car windows while they are stopped at red lights).
She has an old cell phone, uses a record player, and has a library card.

Danielle, I really like the idea of her dating only musicians! They really would be the only people who would understand her relationship style and would definitely go along with the idea that she wants to see the world. Having a repressed childhood studying is a really interesting angle to take her too. Now she strikes me as smart as a whip, not necessarily someone who is just partying to pass the time. So her traveling and dating many people almost comes across as experiencing culture. I could see her in the kitchen, trashing it cooking, but whipping up some amazing dishes from all over.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I love that she admires Scarlett O'Hara... that's so perfect for her character! And I think the idea that she was a foster kid and gave a baby up for adoption is very interesting and could further explain why she needs to get away. Maybe she's figuring things out by running away? And by returning, has to confront some aspect of it like the father, her family disowning her, etc...
